That’s interesting. Added to that Katie you’ve got the in-built delay with a project like the EASEL regeneration – where money for the community facilities only comes through when the money from the private developers of the housing comes through.

Look at the situation even now where all the first phase of housing developments (9 all told) are under way and there hasn’t even been the initial community consultation about what kind of community facilities are needed.

Instead, if you look at community centres in the area for example – which the Area Committee have just been given responsibility for. A whole series of out-of-date, run-down, ill-positioned buildings that have suffered from having no effective management for years.

What can we do about it… well, we’ve got to work out now what are the priorities for development of facilities eg what is the role of community centres in the 21st century? Where should they be and what should be in them? And then we’ve got to get on and make them happen…

I think we go back to the idea before this broadcast of championing particular initiatives like St Hilda’s and the Wykebeck Way; show what is possible and then roll it out across the area.

    Just a little job then!

What’s happening now with this? It would be great to hear about how this project progresses. It brings to mind several other similar projects where people are trying to create or regenerate community facilities that are all just painfully slow. It’s so frustrating when you see how fast private developers can put up new buildings, in the time it takes to just get a project like this started it seems that several apartment blocks, shops and bars can be built and inhabited. We talk about two speed cities, but this two speed development is creating problems where the infrastructure that supports communities can’t keep up with the development of housing and the shifts of migration and transient populations. What can we do about it??
