I think we all have to take responsibility as citizens to keep reminding ourselves of our achievements and our mistakes. To you believe that “this would never happen in England” with regards to the Holocaust or Apartheid is the very reasons it happens. I think it so important that ELFM keep constantly discussing and highlighting the isssues that face us as a whole community. And we do! If you haven’t listened to them yet check the work we have done regarding David Oluwale: http://www.elfm.co.uk/tag/david_oluwale/.
    We are the people…

Of course effective leadership is only possible with active and responsible citizenship. The election of Barack Obama for me is a statement about the impact of decades of work by the civil rights movement in the US. By all kinds of people who risked and sometimes lost their lives in a struggle that had its leaders, but was rooted in citizen action.

And of course included artists like Nina Simone who believed passionately that “the role of an artist is to reflect the times”. She campaigned tirelessy. Some of her songs (like Strange Fruit which is about the lynching of black people in the South) are calls to action. Now, after her death, her songs are used by advertising campaigns to encourage us to consume… reflect the times indeed.

So what does that mean for ELFM working in East Leeds where there is so little in the way of effective leadership or active citizenship; in a country (and a world) which is experiencing exactly the same problem – and is desperately looking for a super-hero to come and save the world – as Gil Scott Heron wrote in B-Movie:

“And when America found itself having a hard time facing the future, they looked for people like John Wayne. But since John Wayne was no longer available, they settled for Ronald Reagan and it has placed us in a situation that we can only look at like a B movie.”

Different movie script but are we doing the same with Barack Obama expecting him to bring us to a glorious Hollywood conclusion?

I applaud the achievements of the civil rights movement in America. Time to get back to the job of creating active citizenship in East Leeds.
